“Your head never remembers the things your heart wants to in hindsight.”
I purposely sat on this review for a week. I had mixed feelings about how this book wrapped up, and I wanted to allow it to simmer for a while before finalizing my thoughts.
The Seven Year Slip is marketed as a romance novel, and there is a blossoming romance taking place throughout the story; however, the overall theme, in my opinion, is overcoming grief.
Clementine suffers a devastating loss pre-narrative, and it shapes her decision-making all throughout the story. We’re fed tid-bits as we proceed that hint at the nature of the loss, but it takes a while for the full picture to be revealed.
The plot progresses well. Like a lot of romance novels, the characters reach the “in love” stage a little too quickly for it to be realistic for me. That’s not to say it wasn’t enjoyable. Overall, I did appreciate this book and I’m glad I read it.
I did have issues with the conclusion of the story, though. First, the way in which the apartment is magical would lead you to believe that certain events will take place, and those events are hinted at, but they do not take place in the narrative. Also, the romantic culmination felt a little underwhelming to me, which I attribute to the fact that the general theme has more to do with loss than with love.
